Excel to CSV converter (and CSV to Excel)
Save every sheet of an Excel workbook as a CSV file in one step, with the separator you need and text that shows accents correctly. Or go the other way and turn a CSV into an .xlsx workbook.

How to convert Excel to CSV
- Choose one or more .xlsx files. All their sheets are listed, with the number of rows in each.
- Tick the sheets to convert and choose the separator. Comma is the standard. Excel in much of Europe expects semicolons. Tab makes a TSV (tab-separated) file.
- Download. One sheet gives a single CSV. Several sheets, or several workbooks, give a ZIP with one CSV per sheet, named after the workbook and the sheet.
To go the other way, choose a .csv file instead. It becomes an .xlsx workbook with one sheet. Several CSV files become one workbook, with one sheet per file.
What ends up in the CSV
- Values, not formatting. CSV is plain text, so colours, fonts, column widths and merged cells are dropped. Numbers are saved without currency symbols or thousands separators (
1234.5), which is what other programs expect when they import a file. - Dates are saved as
2026-03-14(and2026-03-14 09:30with a time), which every program reads the same way. Excel has two ways of storing dates (the usual 1900 system and the older Mac 1904 system), and both are handled. - Formulas give their last calculated result, with all the decimal places Excel stored and without number formatting: 25% becomes
0.25, and a cell showing0.33may give0.333333333333333. - Text stays as typed, including leading zeros, long ID numbers and line breaks inside cells.
- The CSV is saved as UTF-8, the standard text format. If the file will be opened in Excel, keep “Make accents and symbols show correctly in Excel” switched on, so accented letters and other alphabets display correctly. This option adds a small invisible marker at the start of the file (a “byte-order mark”) that tells Excel the file is UTF-8. Turn it off for programs that don’t expect this marker.
CSV to Excel
When you convert a CSV to .xlsx, plain numbers become number cells you can add up. Values that would change if they were treated as numbers stay as text: phone numbers with a leading 0 or +, ZIP codes like 02134, and numbers with 12 or more digits, such as account numbers and phone numbers without a + (Excel would show those as 9.19877E+11). Tick “Keep every cell as text” to keep everything exactly as written.
Files this tool can’t read
Old .xls workbooks (Excel 97–2003) and .ods or .numbers files are not supported. Open them in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers and save them as .xlsx or CSV first. For a password-protected workbook, remove the password first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert all sheets of a workbook at once?
Yes. Every sheet with data is selected for you, and you get a ZIP file with one CSV per sheet.
Why do my dates look different in the CSV?
Dates are saved as YYYY-MM-DD, which can’t be misread, rather than in the format your sheet displays. This way, other programs and people in other countries read them correctly. If you prefer another style, format the column again after opening the CSV.
What happens to formulas?
The CSV gets each formula’s last calculated result, with all the decimal places Excel stored and without number formatting (percentages as decimals, no currency symbols). The formulas themselves are not kept, because a CSV can’t store them.
Should I use a comma or semicolon separator?
Use a comma for most programs and for English-language Excel. Use a semicolon if the CSV will be opened in Excel in a country that writes decimals with a comma (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil…), because Excel there expects semicolons.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 150 MB can be converted here, about as much as a browser tab can work on at once. Workbooks of tens of megabytes convert in seconds on a typical laptop. Very large files depend on your device’s memory, because all the work happens in the browser.
What is the difference between CSV and XLSX?
An XLSX file is an Excel workbook. It can hold several sheets, formulas, formatting and charts, and it stores dates and numbers as such. A CSV file is plain text holding one table, with values separated by commas and no formatting or formulas, so almost any program can read it. XLS is the older Excel workbook format, from before Excel 2007. Use XLSX to work in Excel, and CSV to move data into other apps and databases.
How do I convert Excel to CSV without opening the file?
Choose the workbook here. It is read in your browser, so you don’t need to open it in Excel, or even have Excel installed, and every sheet can be saved as CSV in one step.
How do I open a CSV file in Excel without it changing the formatting?
When Excel opens a CSV, it drops leading zeros, shows long numbers in forms like 9.19877E+11 and turns some codes into dates. Convert the CSV to .xlsx here instead. Values that would change stay as text, and “Keep every cell as text” keeps every cell exactly as written. In Excel itself, Data → From Text/CSV lets you set a column’s type to Text before loading the file.
Can I convert several Excel files to CSV at once?
Yes. Choose all the workbooks together. Every sheet with data is selected for you, and you get one ZIP file with a CSV for each sheet, named after its workbook (and the sheet, when a workbook has several).
Is my workbook uploaded?
No. The workbook is opened and read in your browser, and the CSV files are created on your device.
