Help
Answers to common questions, grouped by topic. Each converter’s page also has a step-by-step guide. Can’t find your answer? Ask us.
General
About the site, your files and History.
Is it free?
Yes. There are no paid plans and no sign-up. You can convert up to 20 files and 150 MB at a time, which is about as much as a browser tab can work on at once.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The page loads a small program into your browser. That program reads your file, converts it and gives you the result, all on your own device. If you want to check, open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab and convert a file: none of the traffic listed there contains your data.
Which tool do I need?
Drop your files into the box at the top of the home page, and it lists the converters that can open them. Or use Search at the top of any page (Ctrl+K, or ⌘K on a Mac) and type what you have and what you want, for example “excel to contacts” or “bank csv to quickbooks”.
Can I download my converted files again later?
Yes, in the same browser on the same device, if you turn on History. You are asked after your first download, or you can use the switch on any tool page. Then open the History page to download your files again or delete them. Copies older than 30 days are deleted, and they are never uploaded.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any up-to-date browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Very large files convert faster on a computer, because the work is done on your own device.
Something didn’t convert correctly. What now?
Please tell us which tool you used and what went wrong. Don’t send your real file. A copy with a few made-up rows that shows the same problem is best.
Contacts
Move contacts between spreadsheets, phones, Google, iCloud and Outlook.
CSV / Excel to vCard
Is my contact list uploaded anywhere?
No. Your own browser reads and converts the file, and the .vcf file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to this website or to anyone else, so it is safe to use for private or business contact lists.
Why do my phone numbers look like 4.47E+11 or miss the leading zero?
Excel treats long strings of digits as numbers. It drops leading zeros and the plus sign, and shows big numbers in a short form such as 4.47E+11. Choose the .xlsx file rather than a CSV saved from it, or format the column as Text in Excel and type the numbers again before converting.
How many contacts can I convert at once?
You can convert files up to 150 MB, about as much as a browser tab can work on at once. Thousands of contacts convert in a second or two, and very large files are limited only by your device’s memory. The app you import into may have its own limit: Google Contacts takes 3,000 per import.
My sheet has the whole name in one column. Will that work?
Yes. Set the column to “Full name”. The vCard keeps the full name exactly as written, for display, and also saves it split into first and last name, which phones use for sorting.
Can I get one .vcf file per contact?
Yes. Tick “One .vcf file per contact” and you get a ZIP file with a separate file for each person, named after the contact. Most apps prefer a single file, which is the default.
Does it work with a CSV exported from Google Contacts or Outlook?
Yes. The converter recognises both layouts, including Google’s separate label and value columns, and its several values in one cell.
Can I convert Excel to VCF on my phone, without installing anything?
Yes. The converter runs in the web browser on your phone or computer, so there is no app, APK or program to install. Open the CSV to vCard converter in Chrome, Safari or another browser, choose the spreadsheet from your files and download the .vcf file. On a phone, you can then open the downloaded file to add the contacts.
How do I import many contacts into my iPhone at once?
Convert the whole spreadsheet into one .vcf file here. Open that file on the iPhone (from Mail, Messages, AirDrop or the Files app) and tap Add All Contacts. Every contact is added in one step, without iTunes. If you use iCloud contacts, you can instead import the file at icloud.com, and the contacts then appear on all your Apple devices.
Which CSV format does Google Contacts need?
Google Contacts imports CSV files in its own layout, with headings such as First Name, Last Name, E-mail 1 - Value and Phone 1 - Value. To see the full layout, export one contact from contacts.google.com as a Google CSV. Google also imports vCard files, so if your sheet has its own headings, converting it to .vcf here saves you renaming the columns.
How do I get contacts from Excel into WhatsApp?
WhatsApp has no import of its own. It shows the people in your phone’s contacts who use WhatsApp. Convert the sheet to a .vcf file here and import it into your phone’s contacts, or into the Google or iCloud account your phone syncs with. The contacts who have WhatsApp then appear there. Save numbers with their country code (such as +44 or +91), so WhatsApp can match them, especially numbers from other countries.
vCard to CSV / Excel
Why does Outlook only import one contact from my vCard file?
Classic Outlook reads only the first contact in a .vcf file. Convert the file to the Outlook CSV layout here and use Outlook’s CSV import instead. Every contact is then imported at once.
How do I open a VCF file in Excel?
Excel can’t read vCard files. Convert the file here to an Excel workbook (.xlsx) or a CSV, then open that. Each contact becomes one row.
Are contact photos included?
No. Photos are stored inside vCards as large blocks of coded text that don’t fit in a spreadsheet cell, so they are left out. Use the merge and split tool if you need to rearrange vCards and keep their photos.
Names in Chinese, Arabic or with accents come out garbled. Can this fix it?
Usually, yes. The converter reads the text formats vCards use: UTF-8 (the modern standard), Windows-1252 (used by older Windows programs) and “quoted-printable”, which older Android phones use. Download as .xlsx, or open the CSV in an app that reads UTF-8, and the names should show correctly.
Can I convert several VCF files at once?
Yes. Select or drop all the files together, and they are combined into one spreadsheet.
Can one vCard file contain several contacts?
Yes. A .vcf file can hold any number of contacts, one after another, each between a BEGIN:VCARD and an END:VCARD line. Phones, Google Contacts and iCloud import all of them. Classic Outlook reads only the first, which is why converting to an Outlook CSV helps. This converter reads every contact in the file and gives each one its own row.
What opens a .vcf file, and why won’t mine open?
A .vcf file is a contacts file, so it opens in a contacts app: Contacts on iPhone, Android and Mac, Google Contacts, iCloud or Outlook. A text editor shows only coded lines, and a computer with no contacts app may not open it at all. To read it as a table, convert it here to CSV or Excel. If this converter finds no contacts, the file isn’t a vCard: the .vcf extension is also used for Variant Call Format files from genetics labs, which contacts apps can’t read.
How can I view a VCF file on a PC?
Choose the file here, and the preview shows the first contacts as a table. To see them all, download the Excel (.xlsx) version and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice, with one contact per row. Nothing needs to be installed, and the file stays on your computer. To browse every contact as a card, with photos and search, use the VCF viewer.
Can I convert a VCF file to PDF?
Not directly. Convert it here to an Excel workbook, open that in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, and use Print to save it as a PDF. You get a printable contact list with one contact per row.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Your contacts are read and converted inside your browser, and the spreadsheet is created on your device.
Merge, split or de-duplicate VCF
Does merging change my contacts?
No. Each card is copied exactly from the original file, in its original text format. Merging only puts the cards one after another in a single file.
Will contact photos survive?
Yes. Photos are part of the card’s text, and cards are copied unchanged, so photos stay in place when you merge, split or remove duplicates.
How big a part should I split into?
For Google Contacts, up to 3,000 contacts per file. For phones, car kits and other services that don’t state a limit, parts of 500 to 1,000 contacts usually import without trouble.
Can I merge vCard 2.1 and 3.0 files together?
Yes. Each card states its own version, and apps read that card by card, so a file that mixes versions imports normally.
How do I delete contacts from a VCF file?
You can’t pick contacts to delete here yet, but there are two ways around it. Split the file into one .vcf per contact (each file is named after the person), then choose only the files you want to keep and merge them back into one file. This keeps every card unchanged, photos included. Or open the file with the VCF to CSV converter, delete the rows in a spreadsheet, and turn it back into a .vcf with the CSV to VCF converter. That way leaves photos out.
Why do my contacts appear twice?
Usually because the same contacts are saved in two places, such as on the phone and in a Google or iCloud account, or because a contact file was imported twice. The phone then shows both copies. To clean up a contact file before you import it, choose Remove duplicate contacts here. For contacts already in an account, use that account’s own tool, such as Merge & fix in Google Contacts.
How do I import several VCF files into Outlook?
Classic Outlook imports only the first contact from each .vcf file. Instead, choose all the files together in the VCF to CSV converter, pick the Outlook CSV layout, and import that one CSV file. Every contact from every file is then imported at once.
How do I extract contacts from a VCF file?
To get each contact as its own .vcf file, choose Split into several .vcf files and One file per contact, then download the ZIP. To get the names, numbers and e-mails as a list, open the file with the VCF to CSV converter instead, which makes a CSV or Excel file.
Is my address book uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, and the new files are created on your device.
VCF file viewer
Does opening the file add the contacts to my phone?
No. The viewer only shows what is in the file. Nothing is imported, and the file is not uploaded anywhere.
Can I open a .vcf file on my phone?
Yes. The VCF viewer works in your phone’s browser. Choose the file from your downloads or files, and the contacts show as cards. To add them to the phone, open the file in the Contacts or Google Contacts app instead.
Are contact photos shown?
Yes, when the photo is stored inside the file, as iPhone exports do. Google’s export only links to its photos online, so those cards show initials: the viewer never loads web addresses from a file.
How do I open a .vcf file in Excel?
Excel opens it as lines of code, not as a table. Save a copy here as an Excel file, or use the vCard to CSV converter for more column layouts.
How many contacts can it show?
Files with many thousands of contacts work. The list shows 50 at a time, with a button to show more, and search covers every contact.
Is my contact list uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
vCard QR code generator
Does the QR code expire?
No. The details are stored in the code itself, not behind a link, so it keeps working for as long as it can be scanned.
Is it free to use on business cards?
Yes. There is no sign-up, watermark or limit, and you can print the code wherever you like.
Why won’t my phone scan the code?
Usually it is printed too small, with too little contrast, or without white space around it. Print it larger, black on white, and leave a margin. If it holds a lot of details, leave out the address to make it less dense.
Can I change the details later?
A static code can’t be changed after it is printed; you make a new one. That is the trade-off for a code that needs no server and never expires.
Can I make QR codes for a whole team?
One at a time for now. For many people at once, you can make a .vcf file for everyone with the CSV to vCard converter, and share that file instead.
Are my details sent anywhere?
No. The code is made by your browser on your device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
Calendar
Turn schedules into calendar events, or calendars into spreadsheets.
CSV / Excel to ICS
Will importing the same file twice create duplicate events?
It can, depending on the app. Each event gets an ID made from its title, date, time and location, so the same event always gets the same ID. This helps some apps recognise repeats, but Google Calendar and Outlook may still add copies. Importing into a separate calendar makes it easy to start again.
Can I add reminders or alerts?
Yes. Choose a reminder (at the start time, or 10 minutes to 1 day before) and every event gets an alert. All-day events get theirs at 9:00 on the day, or the day before with “1 day before”. Some apps, including Google Calendar, may replace imported reminders with your default notification settings.
Can I create repeating events?
Not from a spreadsheet: each row becomes one event. To repeat an event, put each occurrence on its own row, which is easy to fill down in Excel.
How do I make an event last several days?
Give it a start date and an end date, and leave the times empty. It becomes an all-day event covering every day from the start date to the end date, including both.
My times are an hour off after importing. Why?
The “Times in the file are in” option probably doesn’t match the time zone the times were written in. Choose the right time zone and download again. Your calendar then shows each event in your own local time.
What CSV format does Google Calendar need?
Google Calendar’s CSV import expects these headings: Subject, Start Date, Start Time, End Date, End Time, All Day Event, Description, Location and Private. Only Subject and Start Date are required, and Google’s examples write dates as 05/30/2026 and times as 10:00 AM. This converter reads that layout, or any other headings and date styles, and makes an .ics file, which Google imports in the same place.
Why can’t I import a CSV file into Outlook or Apple Calendar?
Outlook.com, the new Outlook, Apple Calendar and iPhone import events only from calendar files (.ics), not from CSV. Classic Outlook for Windows can import a CSV into a calendar through its Import/Export wizard, but the columns must use Outlook’s field names or be matched by hand. An .ics file made here imports into all of them.
How do I add a shift schedule or many events to Google Calendar at once?
Put one shift or event per row in a spreadsheet, with a title, a date, a start time and an end time, for example Early shift, 2026-11-02, 06:00, 14:00. Convert it here, then import the .ics file into Google Calendar on a computer, and every row becomes an event in one step. Night shifts such as 22:00 to 06:00 are placed across midnight automatically. Importing into a separate calendar keeps the rota easy to replace when it changes.
Can ChatGPT make an ICS file?
An AI chatbot can write the text of an .ics file, but check it carefully before importing. Time zones, daylight saving changes, the end date of all-day events (which must be the day after) and commas in titles are where generated files often go wrong, and a mistake may only show up as events at the wrong time. This converter builds the file from your spreadsheet with fixed rules, so the same sheet always gives the same file.
Is my schedule uploaded?
No. The spreadsheet is read and converted in your browser, and the .ics file is created on your device.
ICS to CSV / Excel
Are repeating events expanded into every occurrence?
No. Each repeating event appears once, at its first occurrence, with the rule in the Repeats column. If a single occurrence was changed and the file stores it separately, it appears as its own row.
Why are the times different from the file?
Times are converted to the time zone chosen in “Show times in”. Choose “The time zone written in the file” to see them exactly as stored.
Can I import the CSV into Google Calendar again?
Yes. The first eight columns match Google Calendar’s CSV import. For the closest match to Google’s example, choose the US date format (03/14/2026) and 12-hour times. Importing the original .ics file is usually simpler, though.
Can I combine several calendars into one spreadsheet?
Yes. Choose all the .ics files together. The events are combined and sorted by start time.
Are tasks and reminders included?
Only calendar events are converted. To-dos, journal entries and free/busy blocks are skipped, and an event’s reminders are not listed.
Can I convert my Outlook calendar to Excel?
Yes. First save the calendar as an .ics file: in classic Outlook for Windows with File → Save Calendar, or in Outlook.com and the new Outlook by publishing the calendar and downloading its ICS link (the ICS to CSV converter shows how). Then convert the file here and choose the Excel download.
How do I export my iPhone or iCloud calendar?
iPhone and iCloud have no export button. On a Mac, select the calendar in Apple Calendar and choose File → Export → Export… to save it. Without a Mac, make the calendar public on the iPhone and download it from its share link (the ICS to CSV converter shows how), then turn sharing off again. Convert the .ics file here to get a spreadsheet.
Can you open or view an ICS file in Excel?
Not as a table. Excel has no .ics import, and opening the file as text shows coded lines such as BEGIN:VEVENT and DTSTART. Choose the file here instead: the preview shows the first events straight away, and the CSV or Excel download has one row per event with its dates, times, title and location. To read the events as a day-by-day agenda instead, use the ICS viewer.
How do I export Google Calendar to a CSV file?
Google Calendar exports only .ics files, not CSV. On a computer, open Settings → Import & export → Export, unzip the download, and choose the .ics files here. The CSV you get starts with the same eight headings as Google’s own CSV import.
Is my calendar uploaded?
No. The .ics file is read in your browser, and the spreadsheet is created on your device.
ICS file viewer
Does opening the file add the events to my calendar?
No. The viewer only shows what the file contains. Nothing is imported, and the file is not uploaded.
Why do the times differ from the file?
They are shown in your time zone, as your calendar would show them. Choose “The time zone written in the file” to see them exactly as written.
How do I open an .ics file on Android?
Google Calendar’s Android app can’t import .ics files, but the ICS viewer works in your phone’s browser: choose the file to read its events. To add them, import the file in Google Calendar on a computer.
Can I print the events?
Save a copy as an Excel file, open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, and print it from there. The columns hold the date, times, title, place and description.
Does it show free/busy information and tasks?
No. Only events are shown. Tasks (to-dos) and free/busy blocks in the file are left out.
Is my calendar uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
Bank files
Get bank and card statements into QuickBooks, Quicken, Xero, YNAB and more.
CSV / Excel to OFX, QFX, QBO
Is my bank statement uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser reads and converts the file, and the OFX file is created on your device. No transaction, balance or account number is sent to this site or anywhere else.
QuickBooks Desktop or Quicken says my bank isn’t supported. What can I do?
Those programs check the Intuit bank ID inside QBO and QFX files. Try another bank ID in the options (your own bank’s ID, if you know it), or import a CSV directly if your version allows it. QuickBooks Online also accepts plain OFX.
Will I get duplicate transactions if statement periods overlap?
Each transaction’s ID is made from its date, amount, payee, memo and check number. So the same transaction converted twice gets the same ID, and most apps skip the second copy. Two real transactions that are identical and on the same day get different IDs, so neither is lost.
My credit card purchases show as deposits. How do I fix it?
Many card exports list purchases as positive numbers. Tick “Reverse the signs”, and check that the preview shows purchases as negative amounts before you download.
Which OFX version should I choose?
OFX 1.0.2 is the older version that almost every program reads, and it is the default. Choose 2.2 (XML) only if your app asks for it.
Does the file contain my real account number?
Only if you type it in the optional account number box. Otherwise a placeholder is used. Apps use this number to match the file to an account, and the last four digits are usually enough.
What is the difference between CSV and OFX?
A CSV is a plain table, and every bank arranges its columns differently. An OFX file uses fixed fields for each transaction’s date, amount, payee and memo, and gives each transaction an ID. So finance apps can read an OFX file without asking you to match columns, and can skip transactions they have already imported. QFX and QBO are OFX files with an extra Intuit bank ID for Quicken and QuickBooks. The CSV to OFX converter has a table comparing all four.
Can QuickBooks import a CSV file?
QuickBooks Online can: upload the CSV under Transactions → Bank transactions → Upload from file, and match its date, description and amount columns. QuickBooks Desktop has no import for bank transactions in CSV form. It reads Web Connect (.qbo) files instead, which this converter makes. Intuit moves these menus from time to time, so check its help if an option has changed.
Can I upload a CSV file to Quicken?
Recent versions of Quicken can import a CSV, but only in Quicken’s own fixed column layout (File → File Import on Windows, File → Import on Mac). A CSV import doesn’t check for transactions you already have, and on a Mac it may put them in a new account. A QFX file made here imports through Web Connect into the account you choose, and its transaction IDs let Quicken skip duplicates, so it is usually the simpler route.
Why is QuickBooks not importing all my transactions?
Check three things. First, imported transactions wait for review (the For review list in QuickBooks Online, the Bank Feeds center in QuickBooks Desktop) until you add or match them, so they don’t appear in the register straight away. Second, QuickBooks skips transactions whose ID it has already seen, which happens when statement periods overlap. Third, the converter lists any row it couldn’t read, such as a row without a date or amount, before you download.
CSV / Excel to QIF
Should I use QIF or OFX?
Use OFX (or QFX or QBO) when your app accepts it, because it includes transaction IDs that prevent duplicates. Use QIF when you want categories to come across, or when the app only imports QIF.
Why are my dates wrong after importing?
The program read the day and month the wrong way round. Convert again with the other “Write dates for” option, delete the wrong import, and import the new file.
Can I import split transactions?
Not from a spreadsheet: each row becomes one transaction with one category. You can split transactions in your finance app after importing.
Can Quicken import QIF into my checking account?
It depends on your Quicken version and the account type, because Intuit, and later Quicken Inc., changed this over the years. If Quicken won’t accept the QIF, make a QFX file with the CSV to OFX converter instead.
What is the difference between QIF and CSV?
A CSV is a plain table with whatever columns your bank chose. A QIF file is a text format made for finance programs: each transaction is a group of short lines, one per detail (D for the date, T for the amount, P for the payee, L for the category), ending with a ^ line. Because the fields are fixed, finance apps import QIF without a column-matching step, and unlike OFX it can carry categories.
Which programs open QIF files?
Finance programs import QIF files rather than open them: GnuCash, Moneydance, Banktivity, KMyMoney, HomeBank, Microsoft Money and Quicken (with limits that depend on the version and account type). Excel and text editors show only the coded lines. To read a QIF file as a table, use the QIF to CSV converter.
Why isn’t my CSV importing correctly?
Most problems come from three things: dates read with the day and month swapped, amounts with the wrong sign (purchases showing as deposits), and columns the app doesn’t recognise. Converting to QIF here lets you check each one in the preview before you import: set how dates are written, tick “Reverse the signs” if needed, and match the columns once. Rows that can’t be read are listed, so none are dropped without you knowing.
Can Moneydance import Quicken data?
Yes. Moneydance imports QIF files, the format Quicken exports, as well as OFX and QFX files. Export your data from Quicken as a QIF file and import it in Moneydance with File → Import. If your transactions are in a spreadsheet instead, convert them to QIF or OFX here first.
Is my bank data uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the QIF file is created on your device.
OFX / QFX / QBO to CSV
Can Excel open an OFX, QFX or QBO file directly?
Not in a useful way. Excel shows the file’s raw codes instead of a table. Convert the file here first, and Excel opens it as normal rows and columns.
Some transactions are missing. Why?
Banks usually leave pending transactions out of OFX downloads, and the file covers only the date range you chose when downloading. Download a wider date range and convert again.
Can I combine several statement files?
Yes. Choose them all together, and every transaction goes into one spreadsheet, with an Account column if they come from different accounts.
Are investment accounts supported?
Not yet. Files with investment statements can be opened, but only their bank and credit card transactions are converted. The page tells you when something was left out.
What is the difference between OFX and CSV?
OFX is a format made for bank data. Every transaction has fixed fields for its date, amount, payee and memo, plus an ID, so finance apps can import it without any setup. A CSV is a plain table that any spreadsheet opens, but each bank arranges its columns differently. Converting OFX to CSV gives you a file you can sort, filter and total in Excel or Google Sheets.
How do I open an OFX or QFX file without Quicken?
Choose it here: the preview shows the first transactions as a table straight away, and the CSV or Excel download opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. Finance apps such as GnuCash, Moneydance and Banktivity can also import OFX and QFX files. A text editor shows only the raw OFX tags. To read every transaction with totals, or to search them, use the bank file viewer.
Is a .qbo file the same as QuickBooks Online?
No. A .qbo file is a bank statement download for QuickBooks (a Web Connect file), and that is what this converter reads. QuickBooks Online is also often called “QBO”, but data you export from QuickBooks Online itself, such as reports and lists, usually comes as an Excel file and needs no conversion.
Can I convert an OFX file to PDF?
Not directly. Convert it here to an Excel workbook, open that in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, and use Print to save it as a PDF. You get a readable list of transactions with their dates, amounts and payees.
Is my statement uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser, and the spreadsheet is created on your device.
QIF to CSV / Excel
The dates look wrong. What should I do?
QIF files don’t say whether the day or the month comes first. If every date could be read either way, month first is assumed. Set “Dates in the file” to Day first and check the preview again.
How are split transactions shown?
Either as one row with all categories listed in the Category column, or, with “One row per split line” ticked, as one row per part, with that part’s category, memo and amount.
Can I open a QIF file in Excel directly?
Excel opens it as one column of coded lines (D, T, P, ^…), not as a table. Convert it here to get proper columns.
Accented letters come out wrong. Can that be fixed?
Older QIF files use an older text format called Windows-1252. The converter detects this and reads it correctly. The CSV it saves uses UTF-8, the modern standard, which Excel and other spreadsheets read properly.
What program opens QIF files?
QIF files are made to be imported by finance programs, such as Quicken, Microsoft Money, GnuCash, Moneydance, Banktivity, KMyMoney and HomeBank. Excel and text editors show only the coded lines. To read the transactions as a table, convert the file here and open the CSV or Excel file.
Microsoft Money is no longer sold. How do I move my data?
Microsoft stopped selling Money in 2009 and later released Money Plus Sunset, a free edition that still opens Money files but has no online banking. There is no direct replacement from Microsoft. To move your data, export each account from Money as a QIF file (File → Export). Convert those files here to keep a spreadsheet archive, or import them into another program that reads QIF, such as Moneydance or GnuCash.
How do I convert QIF to QBO?
Choose the QIF file in the bank format converter and pick QBO. Each transaction keeps its date, amount, payee and memo; categories are left out, because QBO files have no field for them, and a split transaction becomes one transaction with its total amount. A QBO file holds one account, so a QIF file with several accounts is converted one account at a time.
Can I convert a QIF file to PDF?
Not directly. Convert it here to an Excel workbook, open that in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, and use Print to save it as a PDF.
Is my financial data uploaded?
No. The QIF file is read in your browser, and the spreadsheet is created on your device.
OFX, QFX, QBO and QIF viewer
Does opening the file import anything?
No. The viewer only shows what the file contains. Nothing is imported into any app, and the file is not uploaded.
Why does Excel show code instead of transactions?
OFX, QFX, QBO and QIF files are made for finance apps, so Excel shows their tags. Save a copy here as an Excel file to get proper columns: date, payee, memo and amount.
What is the difference between QFX and QBO?
Both are OFX files with an Intuit bank ID. QFX is for Quicken and QBO for QuickBooks; the inside is almost the same, and the bank format converter turns one into the other.
Can it open investment statements?
Only bank and credit card transactions are shown. Investment holdings and trades are left out, with a note: investment sections of a QIF file and investment statements in an OFX file.
The QIF dates look wrong. Why?
QIF files don’t say whether the day or the month comes first. When every date could be read either way, month first is used. Choose “Dates in the file” to change it.
Is my financial data uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
OFX, QFX, QBO and QIF converter
What is the difference between QFX and QBO?
Both are OFX statement files with an Intuit bank ID. QFX is the file type Quicken imports and QBO the one QuickBooks imports. Converting between them keeps the transactions, their IDs, the account and the balances; only the file type changes, and the Intuit bank ID if you change it.
Will importing the converted file create duplicates?
Not when converting between QFX, QBO and OFX: the transaction IDs are kept, so apps skip transactions they already have. QIF files have no IDs, so avoid importing overlapping dates from a QIF file.
QuickBooks refuses the file or can’t verify the bank. What can I do?
QuickBooks Desktop checks the Intuit bank ID in the file against the banks it knows. Try your own bank’s ID, or 3000, and convert again. The QuickBooks Web Connect guide covers the other common import errors.
Can I convert a CSV or Excel statement?
Yes, with the CSV to OFX converter (for OFX, QFX or QBO) or the CSV to QIF converter.
Can it convert investment accounts?
No. Only bank, cash and credit card accounts are converted. Investment holdings and trades (investment sections of a QIF file, investment statements in an OFX file) are left out, with a note, because bank statement files can’t hold them.
Is my financial data uploaded?
No. The file is converted by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
CSV & Excel
Convert, clean, split and merge spreadsheet files.
Excel ⇄ CSV
Can I convert all sheets of a workbook at once?
Yes. Every sheet with data is selected for you, and you get a ZIP file with one CSV per sheet.
Why do my dates look different in the CSV?
Dates are saved as YYYY-MM-DD, which can’t be misread, rather than in the format your sheet displays. This way, other programs and people in other countries read them correctly. If you prefer another style, format the column again after opening the CSV.
What happens to formulas?
The CSV gets each formula’s last calculated result, with all the decimal places Excel stored and without number formatting (percentages as decimals, no currency symbols). The formulas themselves are not kept, because a CSV can’t store them.
Should I use a comma or semicolon separator?
Use a comma for most programs and for English-language Excel. Use a semicolon if the CSV will be opened in Excel in a country that writes decimals with a comma (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil…), because Excel there expects semicolons.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 150 MB can be converted here, about as much as a browser tab can work on at once. Workbooks of tens of megabytes convert in seconds on a typical laptop. Very large files depend on your device’s memory, because all the work happens in the browser.
What is the difference between CSV and XLSX?
An XLSX file is an Excel workbook. It can hold several sheets, formulas, formatting and charts, and it stores dates and numbers as such. A CSV file is plain text holding one table, with values separated by commas and no formatting or formulas, so almost any program can read it. XLS is the older Excel workbook format, from before Excel 2007. Use XLSX to work in Excel, and CSV to move data into other apps and databases.
How do I convert Excel to CSV without opening the file?
Choose the workbook here. It is read in your browser, so you don’t need to open it in Excel, or even have Excel installed, and every sheet can be saved as CSV in one step.
How do I open a CSV file in Excel without it changing the formatting?
When Excel opens a CSV, it drops leading zeros, shows long numbers in forms like 9.19877E+11 and turns some codes into dates. Convert the CSV to .xlsx here instead. Values that would change stay as text, and “Keep every cell as text” keeps every cell exactly as written. In Excel itself, Data → From Text/CSV lets you set a column’s type to Text before loading the file.
Can I convert several Excel files to CSV at once?
Yes. Choose all the workbooks together. Every sheet with data is selected for you, and you get one ZIP file with a CSV for each sheet, named after its workbook (and the sheet, when a workbook has several).
Is my workbook uploaded?
No. The workbook is opened and read in your browser, and the CSV files are created on your device.
Split CSV
Is the header row kept in every file?
Yes. Each part begins with the header row, followed by its share of the data rows. If your file has no header row, untick “First row contains column names”.
Can it split files too big for Excel?
Yes. The file is read by your browser, not by Excel, so CSV files with millions of rows can be split, as long as your device has enough memory. Browsers on a computer handle files of a few hundred megabytes.
Can I split by file size instead of rows?
Not directly. Work out the average size of a row, then divide the part size you want by it. For example, a 100 MB file with 1,000,000 rows has about 100 bytes per row, so parts of 50,000 rows come to roughly 5 MB each.
Does splitting change my data?
No. Rows keep their order and values. The only change is that every part is saved as a standard CSV file with commas as separators (UTF-8), or as .xlsx if you choose that.
Can a CSV file have 2 million rows?
Yes. A CSV file has no row limit of its own. Excel, though, shows at most 1,048,576 rows per sheet and leaves out the rest when it opens a bigger file. Split the file here into parts of up to 1,000,000 rows, and each part opens in full in Excel.
How do I split a CSV file into columns?
That is a different job: dividing one column into several, such as a full name into first and last name. In Excel, select the column and use Data → Text to Columns. If the whole file shows up in one column, it uses a separator your Excel doesn’t expect, and the CSV cleaner can change it.
Can I split an Excel file into multiple files?
Yes. Choose the .xlsx file here, pick the sheet, and choose how to split it. Each part can be saved as an Excel workbook or as a CSV file, with the header row in every part. Excel has no built-in command for this, so without a tool you would copy the rows into new workbooks by hand.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Splitting happens in your browser, and the ZIP file is created on your device.
Merge CSV files
What if the files have different columns?
Every column from every file appears in the result. Rows from files that don’t have a column are left blank in it. Columns are matched by name, ignoring upper and lower case.
Will the header row be repeated in the middle?
No. Each file’s header row is used to match the columns and appears only once, at the top of the merged file.
How many files can I merge?
You can merge up to 20 files and 150 MB at a time, about as much as a browser tab can work on at once. Files with hundreds of thousands of rows in total merge in seconds on a typical computer.
Can I merge Excel files too?
Yes. Choose .xlsx files, and each sheet with data is added. You can mix them with CSV files and download the result as CSV or as an Excel workbook.
How do I put several CSV files on one worksheet in Excel?
Merge them here and download the result as an Excel workbook. All the rows end up on one sheet, with the columns lined up by name and a single header row at the top. Tick the “Source file” column option to see which file each row came from.
How do I combine two Excel files and remove duplicates?
Choose both .xlsx files, tick “Remove duplicate rows” and download the result as CSV or Excel. Columns are matched by name, so the files don’t need the same columns in the same order. A row counts as a duplicate when every column matches an earlier row, and the number of rows removed is shown before you download.
What can I do if a CSV file is too large for Excel?
Excel shows at most 1,048,576 rows per sheet. If the merged result has more, download it as CSV rather than as an Excel workbook, then cut it into parts Excel can open with the CSV splitter. Or merge only the files you need for the job at hand.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The files are combined in your browser, and the merged file is created on your device.
CSV ⇄ JSON
Which JSON layout should I choose?
A list of records (an array of objects) suits most apps and APIs. Choose JSON Lines for data tools that read one record per line, such as BigQuery and many log and data-loading tools. Choose rows as lists (an array of arrays) for the smallest file, with the header as the first row.
Will numbers like 00123 or long IDs be changed?
No. Values with leading zeros, and numbers longer than 15 digits, are written as text, so they stay exactly as in your file. Choose “Keep everything as text” to write every value as text.
How is nested JSON turned into columns?
Nested objects become columns named with dots (address.city). Lists can be joined into one cell, kept as JSON text, or spread over numbered columns (tags.0, tags.1).
Can I convert an API response?
Yes. Save or paste the response. If the records sit inside another object (for example {"data": {"items": […]}}), the tool finds the largest list of records and tells you which one it used.
What is the difference between CSV and JSON?
CSV is a flat table: one row per record, the same columns for every row, and a compact file that any spreadsheet opens. JSON stores each record as named fields that can hold lists and nested objects, which suits apps, APIs and settings files. Neither is better in general. Use CSV for spreadsheets and bulk imports, and JSON when a program expects it or the data is nested.
How do I store JSON data in a CSV file?
Give each nested field its own column. Choose the JSON file here, and nested objects become columns named with dots (address.city). Lists can be joined in one cell, kept as JSON text in one cell, or spread over numbered columns. Converting such a CSV back to JSON here turns the dotted names into nested objects again.
How do I convert a CSV file to JSON in Excel?
Excel has no option to save a sheet as JSON. Its Power Query feature can read JSON, but not write it. Choose the .xlsx or CSV file here instead and pick the sheet: the first row gives the field names, and you download a .json file.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the new file is created on your device.
CSV cleaner
How do I change a semicolon CSV to a comma CSV?
Choose the file, keep “Comma” as the separator and download. Values that contain commas are put in quotes automatically, so no value is split by mistake. A simple find-and-replace would break them.
Why does Excel show strange characters, and how do I fix it?
Excel guesses the text format when it opens a CSV, and often guesses wrong for UTF-8 files (the modern standard). Under “Save the text”, choose “For Excel (accents show correctly)” and download the cleaned file. Excel will then show accents and other alphabets correctly.
Which rows count as duplicates?
By default, rows that are identical in every column after spaces are trimmed. Under “Find duplicates by” you can pick one column instead, for example e-mail, to keep one row per address. The first row is kept and later ones are removed. Rows with an empty value in that column are always kept.
Will it change my numbers or dates?
Not in CSV files. Cells are only trimmed (if you choose that) and never reformatted, so dates, amounts and leading zeros stay as they are. From an Excel file, dates are saved as YYYY-MM-DD and number formatting is dropped, as with any CSV export.
How do I make Excel save a CSV with semicolons, or change its separator?
Excel takes the separator from your computer’s region settings. On Windows you can change it under Control Panel → Region → Additional settings → List separator, but that also affects other programs. The simpler way is to save the CSV from Excel as usual, choose it here, pick the separator you need (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe) and download the new file.
What is the difference between CSV and CSV UTF-8 in Excel?
“CSV UTF-8” saves the text as UTF-8, the modern standard, which keeps every letter and alphabet, and adds the small marker Excel looks for. Plain “CSV” uses an older text format that depends on your computer’s settings (often Windows-1252), and letters it can’t store are replaced with question marks. Choose CSV UTF-8 unless an old program asks for the other. This tool’s “For Excel” option saves the file the same way as CSV UTF-8.
How are commas inside values handled?
A value that contains the separator, a quote or a line break has to be wrapped in double quotes, and a quote inside it is written twice: "Smith, John" or "She said ""yes""". The cleaner reads such values correctly and writes them back with the right quotes, so changing the separator never splits a value. Tick “Put quotes around every value” if an import tool needs every value quoted.
How do I remove blank rows from a CSV file?
Choose the file here and download the cleaned version. Blank rows, including rows that hold only separators or spaces, are always removed, and the summary tells you how many there were. To remove columns that are completely empty as well, tick that option.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Cleaning happens in your browser, and the new file is created on your device.
