The pattern keeps to its weekdays whatever the start date: a schedule starting on a Thursday begins in the middle of the week’s pattern.

How to make a custody calendar

  1. Type the parents’ names, or leave “Parent A” and “Parent B”.
  2. Choose the schedule and the date it starts, which is the first day of the first block. Choose which parent starts.
  3. Check the months. Each day shows the parent the children are with, and the summary gives each parent’s share of time and the number of handovers.
  4. Download it: a calendar file for both parents’ phones, a PDF with one month per page to print, or a spreadsheet with one row per day.

The common 50/50 schedules

  • Alternating weeks (7-7): one week with each parent. The fewest handovers, but a week between visits.
  • 2-2-3: Monday and Tuesday with one parent, Wednesday and Thursday with the other, Friday to Sunday with the first; the next week the other way round. Children are never more than 3 days away from either parent, and the weekends alternate.
  • 2-2-5-5: each parent has the same 2 weekdays every week (for example Monday and Tuesday with one, Wednesday and Thursday with the other), and the weekends alternate, joined to those weekdays to make 5 days.
  • 3-4-4-3: Sunday to Tuesday, then Wednesday to Saturday, then Sunday to Wednesday, then Thursday to Saturday. Each parent has the same two weekdays every week, and one day of every weekend (Sundays with one parent, Saturdays with the other).
  • 5-2-2-5: the same weekdays every week (Wednesday and Thursday with one parent, Monday and Tuesday with the other) and alternating weekends, so each parent has a 5-day and a 2-day stretch.

Every one of these gives each parent half the days over each two weeks. Each pattern keeps to its weekdays whatever the start date: a schedule that starts on a Thursday simply begins in the middle of the week’s pattern. Choose who has the first block; the summary then shows each parent’s regular weekdays, how the weekends fall and the exact split for the dates you choose.

Weekend schedules

Every other weekend gives one parent the weekdays and alternate weekends, and the other parent every second Saturday and Sunday. Weekdays and weekends gives one parent every weekend. Both line up with Saturdays and Sundays automatically, whatever start date you choose; pick a date in the week the first weekend falls in.

Adding the schedule to both phones

  • Google Calendar: on a computer, create a new calendar (for example “Kids”), then Settings → Import & export → choose the file and that calendar. It then shows on the phone too.
  • iPhone and iPad: open the file from Mail, Messages or Files and tap Add All; choose a separate calendar if asked.
  • Outlook: classic Outlook for Windows: File → Open & Export → Import/Export. New Outlook and Outlook.com: Add calendar → Upload from file.

Importing into a separate calendar keeps the schedule apart from your own events and lets you delete and replace it in one step if the plan changes. Each parent imports the same file.

Holidays, trips and swaps

The maker draws the regular schedule. Holidays, school breaks and swapped weekends usually follow their own rules in a parenting plan. Add those as separate events in your calendar, or change the days in the spreadsheet copy. Where a parenting plan or court order sets the schedule, that is what applies; this tool only lays out the pattern. It is a planning aid, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2-2-3 schedule really 50/50?

Yes. Over each two weeks, each parent has 7 days. The summary shows the exact numbers for your dates, which can differ by a day or two when the schedule doesn’t end on a full cycle.

Can both parents see the same calendar?

Yes. Each parent imports the same calendar file into their own calendar app. If the schedule changes, make a new file and replace the old calendar.

Does it count overnights or days?

Calendar days: each day of the schedule belongs to one parent, and the percentage counts those days. Courts and child support agencies often count overnights or hours instead, which can give a different split, so treat the percentage as a guide.

Can I make my own pattern?

Yes. Choose “Custom pattern” and type the day counts in turn, such as 3 4 4 3 or 2 2 3 2 2 3. The pattern repeats for the whole schedule.

Can I add holidays?

Not in the maker itself. Add holidays and special days as events in your calendar, or edit the spreadsheet copy.

Is any of this information uploaded?

No. The schedule is made by your browser on your device; names and dates are not sent to us or anyone else.
