About e-mail files
Mail programs save a single message as an .eml file (the internet standard) or, in Outlook, as a .msg file, and keep whole folders as .mbox mailboxes, the format of Gmail’s Google Takeout export. Outlook can also pack attachments into a winmail.dat file that other programs can’t open. These tools open all of them in the browser, without a mail program, and save messages as PDF, as .eml files any mail program opens, or as a spreadsheet.
